Most owners are responsible & do pick up their dogs mess, but the few that don’t mean that responsible owners suffer – access to places where dogs can run freely off lead seems to be reducing at a scary rate & we need to protect what we’ve currently got.
Howling is a dog’s equivalent of using the phone. It’s used to attract attention and it’s how the dog makes contact with dogs in other territories, even when they are a great distance away.
Poor Gus. He’s been very unsettled recently with all this wind & I need to help him cope better – getting cross wouldn’t help anyone. So, I kept him busy with food in his snuffle mat, filled Kongs and his lickimat. Eventually he settled down on the settee and dozed off.
Fuss and touch praise are important to show your dog they’ve done something you wanted. And touch is an important way you show your dog you love them.
Frustration is a common cause of arguments between owners and dogs too. In this case it’s often due to a lack of understanding – a mistranslation, or miscommunication, or incomprehension of the other’s language, which create a build up of stress and tension.
Dogs crouching down may be due to fear or it’s a behaviour bred into herding dogs – like a sheepdog with sheep.
Whatever you name your dog doesn’t really matter. What’s important is that you teach him how to live happily in the crazy world of ours.
Dogs learn to understand is your tone of voice – it’s not what you say, it’s how you say it.
This Talking Tip is all about how we need to think about the tone of voice we use – and how powerful good vocal praise is.
Dogs love interactive play with their beloved owner – so whether you throw a ball or frisbee for your dog, or play tug games, or simply do some training – which is just playing games on our Perfect Pet courses – please have some fun with your dog.
