March challenge 5

To play with your dog and his or her favourite toy in at least THREE different places on your walk

What? You don’t know what your dog’s favourite toy is?

Find out.

Put two or three toys down on the floor, play with them yourself and see which one he shows most interest in. They try a different combination of toys (I know you have loads) using that first favourite against two other different ones. Eventually it will become clear which his favourite is.

What? He isn’t interested in any toys?

Try “non-toy” things, like old socks or slippers, empty plastic drink bottles, toilet roll cardboard inners, pieces of carpet, a feather or plastic piping.

Use the information you got from doing challenge 3 to think of things your dog might like to play with.

Once you’ve found something he shows some interest in, take it out on your walk.

Play with the toy with your dog for a few seconds at least three times during the walk. Play in different places. Your aim is to show your dog that you’re fun to be with.

Keep these play sessions short, perhaps only around 20-30 seconds – the aim should be to stop before your dog wants to.

Have fun together.

Keep training,

Carol
