How long will your dog live?
Want to know what the average life expectancy of your dog’s breed is
Carol Clark, The Doggy Doctor, has put together all of her Wednesday Why's emails and other posts that give you plenty to work on with your dogs and talk about the troubles people have with their dogs and how to overcome them.
Want to know what the average life expectancy of your dog’s breed is
It’s all too easy for anyone to forget things in today’s constantly busy lives. Including training your dog. When did you last go out and deliberately train your dog to do something you want them to do?
Reduce the amount you give as your dog gets more proficient – but think about how hard the training is for your dog and match the number of treats to its complexity
Ever wondered why we eat eggs at Easter? When chocolate eggs were first sold? Find out why the right reward will motivate your dog to respond well to your training
12% of owners don’t do any training with their dog! Meaning those dogs aren’t being taught any rules of behaviour and will soon become out of control pestering other people and their dogs
We need to talk about giving a treat fast enough but not so fast that you’re handing them the treat before they’ve even done the behaviour you want
Dogs are much easier to train when you offer them a reward. These include food, toy play, tummy rubs or simply having your full attention. What does your dog respond best to?
On #NationalWalkingDay what else could we talk about except how proud we are of our dogs? A recent walk on a local beach tested Gus’ recall and we helped spread the word. There’s nothing better than our own dogs showing the world how well they’ve been trained!
Reward-based methods are not only more humane than aversive methods such as yanking dogs around and pushing them into positions, but they have been proven to be more effective, improve your dog’s confidence, and lead to happier dogs – and happier trainers!
Remember to check your dog walking equipment – dogs who pull when out on walks put additional strain on these clips, so teaching your dog to walk nicely on lead is the best way to prevent such a terrible event happening to you and your dog
