Why won’t my dog come back?

Your dog will respond to how you treat them and if you give them lots of attention on a walk then they’re much more like to come back to you when you call them

We’ve been people watching as they walk their dogs

I was watching people trying to call their dog a few days ago. Most dogs were off lead, which is fine – giving your dog freedom to run around is part of being a responsible dog owner – but the law states your dog must be under control in a public place, and this includes coming when called.

Person A: On the phone. Ignored his dog pestering another couple and their dog. Dog ran riot. Eventually called dog, who ignored him, deciding for itself when to come back

Person B: Called dog, one cue. Dog started to come back – then was distracted by a scent and ran off again

Person C: Called dog in panicky voice “Buddy, come here; come HERE Buddy: Buddy will you do as you’re told: Come here NOW.” Needless to say dog continued to do its own thing, oblivious

Person D: Played with her dog lots – tug games, fetch games and scent games. Allowed her dog to have a good sniff round a dune, called it in a happy voice and dog bounded to her immediately to receive a fuss and a yummy treat.

Which person are you?

If you recognise yourself as person A, B or C you need our Reliable Recall Masterclass. Come and learn how to be Person D instead.

If you are proud (and you should be) to be person D – well done! You have obviously attended one of our courses previously – as had the real life person D!

Come back here!

Keep training and stay safe,

Carol
