To kick off our brand new venture, Doggy Doctor Discusses, we’re going to talk about different types of guarding behaviour your dog might display. During this monthly, live online call you can ask about any doggy dilemmas you’re facing.
Has your dog ever turned against you?
We’ll chat about guarding behaviour then you’ll be able to ask any questions you have about anything you’re struggling with, or puzzled by or want advice about.
“My dog’s guarding things is getting worse. We can usually get socks and household items off him in exchange for a treat, but there are other situations where he has gone for me aggressively. It is as if he is a different dog. After such incidents he fairly quickly returns to normal, but it leaves me fearful. Any advice would be welcome.”
Dogs will sometimes try to protect things they see as valuable from people or other dogs by snarling, growling or snapping.
You’ll be shocked and disappointed if your dog growls at you and, like this client above, it can even make you frightened of your own dog. Not nice.
Not all dog guarding is aggressive or even noticeable
Most guarding is less severe – and might not even be noticed.
Has your dog ever lifted something in their mouth and walked off as you approach?
Or have they pushed between you and another person or dog?
Do they lift their lip if you approach while they’re eating?
Perhaps they object if you try to move them off a favourite sofa?
These are all types of guarding behaviour – and they may not matter too much. But it does matter if there is any aggression or the behaviour is getting worse.
