Of all the dogs I’ve had – all collies – how much they’ve barked has been very different. Bryn barked for the first time only once he was over a year old. And he surprised himself so much he hardly ever barked again. Whereas Gus has barked since the day we brought him home!
Excessive barking can be a problem in some breeds, but any dog may exhibit problem barking. Just like some people talk incessantly, and love the sound of their own voice, some dogs are similar.
Why do dogs bark? There are many reasons.
Dogs bark when they want to warn you about something, such as someone coming to your door, or someone passing by, or when they see something they think might be a threat to them or you.
They may also bark when they are excited or when they’re annoyed, or surprised, or irritated, or frightened or lonely. Some dogs bark to say hello, others when they want to play.
Any barking can be made worse by your reaction to it, as well. Shouting “Shut UP!” doesn’t help. I know. I try that regularly…
As for how to stop a dog barking – well, it’s difficult if not impossible to teach a negative.
Barking is a normal behaviour for dogs, but it can be REALLY annoying for us as owners.
So I’ve joined forces with the Barking Dog specialist, Claire Lawrence, who’ll be running an online webinar on Sunday November 29th from 6.30-8pm. She’s an entertaining speaker and is a fount of knowledge about barking dogs and how you can solve the problem.
She’s featured in Your Dog Magazine and she’s written three barking dog books. (She’s also a three times winner at Crufts. She knows her stuff and she’ll tell and show you what to do about any annoying barking problems you may have with your dog.
Claire will show you how to regain control and re-build your confidence. You’ll get plenty of opportunity to ask questions, and you’ll receive a copy of Claire`s book, Three Steps to Silence. There’s a special lockdown bonus for everyone who books a spot, too.
