Why does my dog…steal food?

Many, many years ago when Daughter No’s 1 and 2 were small, I had a friend and her son visiting. The weather was lovely so we decided to have a picnic. My friend and I carried on chatting as we made some sandwiches and opened packets of crisps. We paid some homage to healthy eating by cutting up some fruit, even in the knowledge that our darling offspring were unlikely to partake.

I put a plate of cheese sandwiches on the outside table and went back in for the crisps. I was only gone for a minute or two but when I came back half the sandwiches were missing and my current dog was under the table licking his lips.

My fault for leaving food unattended where my dog could get at it.

Stealing food is one of the most difficult habits to deal with. Dogs are natural scavengers and stealing is just a form of scavenging. Because dogs have no morals, unattended food is seen as fair game.

The only sure-fire way to prevent your dog stealing food is good management – never leave food unattended anywhere your dog might be able to reach it. Otherwise practice makes perfect – for your dog!

Hope to see you at one or t’other.

Keep training,

Carol
