When the boss is away… Himself will play

I was away enjoying some time out last weekend. I went to a craft get together over in England and it was great. Except for one thing…

Himself took me to the airport late Friday morning. I was a bit surprised when he didn’t moan nearly as much as usual and was quite upbeat and chatty on the way up.

At the airport Himself leapt out of the car to lift my bag out of the boot and cheerily waved goodbye before driving off, leaving me standing with mouth hanging open in amazement at this unusual behaviour.

Shrugging, I went off to catch my flight to Birmingham.

After the flight, a shuttle link, a train journey, and a short taxi ride I arrived at my destination, booked into my hotel and finally, tired and travel-worn, relaxed with a sigh in my hotel room.

Then I received a text from Himself.

After dropping me off, Himself had gone off to a Fiat car dealership in Newtownabbey “just to have a look”. Fat chance. Himself had a test drive in a two seater car with a soft top.

Himself has always wanted an open top car. He harbours some far-fetched dream about driving round our roads with the wind in his hair (or what’s left of it) and a throaty roar from a sporty exhaust.

Himself, clearly excited  – you can tell even via texts – had been given “a brilliant offer” to buy a used open top car.

Himself is going through a (very) late mid-life crisis. It’s probably only because he doesn’t know how to transfer money between our savings and bank account that he didn’t buy it there and then.

He sent me links to see a picture of one and hear its throaty exhaust on the Internet.
He gushed about its performance, the sound it made, how it drove and how good it was round corners, but he failed to answer the two most important questions.
What colour was it and would Gus fit in?

Turns out it’s blue – quite a nice blue, actually. And Gus might fit in in the passenger footwell if there’s no room at all behind the seats. Himself has arranged for us to have it on loan for a day to see if I like it (and if Gus would fit).

It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of something new, especially if it fits with a long-standing dream.

And if an offer is really good then it’s worth taking seriously.

Keep training,

Carol

PS The fact that Himself would probably only be able to drive this dream car as he wishes on around three days a year due to our inclement weather has passed Himself by…
