I challenge you to teach a leg weave

I was shocked last night to hear that Boris Johnson was admitted to ICU. Although I didn’t vote for him and totally disagree with his policies, I do think he has done quite a good job of dealing with the coronavirus crisis so far.

Whatever, he is a fellow human being and I hope he recovers soon. I’m also sad for his family – he is a son, father and partner and his girlfriend is pregnant as well.

I’m seeing posts on Facebook now from people I know who know someone who is currently in hospital or has died from this dreadful disease. It’s hitting home just how important it is to try and stay safe. I am thankful that my family is all safe and well and I will do my utmost to make sure they stay that way.

I’m also so glad we started this Coronavirus Canine Challenge as it’s great to take time out from all the worry and angst and just play with your dog.

Today’s Coronavirus Canine Challenge is to teach your dog to weave, around and in and out of your legs.  Here’s how, if you haven’t seen the video.

Have a treat in both hands. Stand with your legs apart, wide enough to give your dog room to go through. Start with your dog at your left side or just in front of you and, using the treat to lure him, guide him through your legs from front to back, round your right leg and back through your legs again to finish at your left side. (If you want, you can reverse that and send him from your right side first – your choice.)

With some dogs you may want to break it down even further and reward them for each movement through or round your legs. Some dogs can be quite unsure what you’re asking them to do at first, so take your time and praise and reward every attempt your dog makes.

Once you’ve taught a figure of eight weave round your legs try a walking weave. Start with your dog at your side again – I start with Gus on my left side. Then I step forward with the opposite leg (my right) and lure him between my legs. As he comes round my right leg I step forward with my left leg and so on. The key thing to remember is to step forward with the leg opposite the side the dog is on.

Have fun and please post any videos in the group – it’s great to see everyone’s progress.

Keep safe and keep training

Carol

PS If you’ve already taught a leg weave, how about teaching your dog to reverse back through your legs? Now there’s a challenge!
