How to give food treats

Today’s Talking Tip (no. 2) is all about giving food to your dog.

We’re not talking about feeding in a bowl. Bowls are for liquids or sometimes wet food.

We use our dogs daily food to help give our dog a fun life.
– we give their food plus occasional treats as rewards throughout the day whenever they do what we’ve asked, or when we want to encourage certain behaviours, such as settling quietly
– we put their food into fun toys such as snuffle mats, Kongs or licki mats at mealtimes
– we use food to play all sorts of training games and scent games

But how you give your dog his treat is important.

Many dogs snatch at treats, which in turn makes the human pull their hand away, which in turn makes the dog snatch at it more…

Children can find it especially difficult to give the dog a treat safely.

Perhaps your dog grabs the treat, nipping your fingers as he does so..

Or perhaps your dog just can’t seem to take a treat from you, so it’s easier to drop it on the floor.

In today’s Talking Tip we show you how to break the ‘snatch-pullaway-sntatch more’ cycle and give you a few different options of how to give your dog a treat, including the best way for children to give a dog treats.
