Why does my dog…bark so much?

Here’s the problem I got asked about recently:

“Dilly is quite “barky” in the house, whenever someone walks past the front, or when a car or van pulls up. She sits in the living room looking out.”

We get a lot of people asking for help because their dog barks a lot.

Some dogs are far more vocal than others. Gus barks a lot. But one of my previous dogs only barked once in his entire life. Just like some people never stop talking and others are silent and mysterious. You can decide where on that spectrum I sit…

Barking’s a huge topic because there are a myriad of reasons why dogs bark. I’m going to cover barking in a future book and it will take up most of the book, it’s such a big area. Barking isn’t a problem for the dog, but it can be a problem for you, especially if you live close by neighbours who get annoyed by it.

Today I’ll talk about why dogs bark at the front window.

Dogs bark at things coming past or to your home as a warning – to let you know there’s something there. Most adult dogs develop some level of territorial guarding and for most it shows as a bark to tell you someone has arrived or is going past your home.

Some dogs develop a habit of barking at things going past as a form of recreation. A front room window acts as a fascinating wide screen TV for your dog. Passing things moving across her “screen” excite her, so she barks.

With practice, any form of barking becomes a habit.

What can you do about barking at the front window?

Ask us for help if your dog’s barking is deafening you and annoying your neighbours.

Keep training,

Carol
