Why Monday was is a blue, rescue day

Beat the January Blues by making someone else happy – how about a donation to your favourite charity?

There’s a reason you may be feeling low this week

Did you know that 17th January 2022 is known as Blue Monday? It’s a day when all those new year resolutions start to fail, a day when winter still stretches ahead, with cold, dark mornings and cold dark afternoon-evenings.

Cheer yourself up today by doing something positive.

A movement started in the US on social media is encouraging dog lovers across the world to donate £5 to dog rescue and rehoming charities today.

Dog rescue centres are so busy at this time of year

As I talked about last week, rescues are inundated even more than usual at the moment and need support, as do all the other dog charities out there, such as Guide dogs, Hearing dogs and our own Down Dog supported charity, Medical Detection Dogs.

Monday would have been Betty White’s 100th birthday. Betty White was dubbed the “First Lady of Television.” She became an actress, initially on radio and then pioneering sitcoms on TV. She continued working until 2019 at the age of 98. She died in her sleep aged 99 on December 31st, after a stroke on Christmas Day.

She opposed racial injustice and was a passionate supporter of LGBT rights. I love this quote from her, as relevant today as it ever was: “I don’t know how people can get so anti-something. Mind your own business, take care of your affairs, and don’t worry about other people so much.”

Betty White was also a pet enthusiast and animal welfare champion. She published a clothing line in 2010 and a 2011 calendar, featuring photos from her career and with various animals, with proceeds going to the various animal charities she supported.

Perhaps like me you already donate regularly to a favourite charity or charities. But today I’ll be giving a little extra in memory of an extraordinary woman.

Why not donate something to cheer yourself up?

Keep training and stay safe,

Carol
