#PickUpPoo day was created by Lottie Clements from The Cosy Canine Company to help encourage people always to pick up after their dog AND dispose of it properly – it’s one of the responsibilities you take on as a dog owner
Poo bags in every pocket
There’s a lot to remember when talking Gus for a walk. His harness and lead, obviously, but also treats and poo bags.
I think every coat and jacket I own has at least one poo bag in a pocket. Not infrequently a beautifully clean one appears in the washing machine.
When is a poo bag not a poo bag? When it’s a treat caddy, phone water-proofer, or receptacle for blackberries… there are many uses for poo bags! What do you use yours for (apart from its original purpose, obvs!)?
Poo bags are an essential but I worry about all that plastic.
Biodegradable dog poo bags
Last year I bought a bumper pack of biodegradable bags. They looked good, but after a few months they started to live up to their name in a way I did not expect. I bent down with my hand inside the bag, stretched around Gus’s poo – and my fingers went right through as the bag disintegrated.
Yeuch. I won’t say more, except to note that dock leaves work fairly well to provide an emergency substitute wrapping for poo when carried carefully in two hands. Luckily, I was not too far from home, warm water and a large bar of soap.
I now use some lovely eco-friendly bags which are sturdy and strong.
There are over nine million dogs in the UK which is a lot of poo and poo bags. I’m sure you hate, as I do, finding piles of poo on pavements and paths and I detest the all-too-common poo bag tree and hedge decorations. Really? What is that about?
Today is Pick up Poo day. This day was created by Lottie Clements from The Cosy Canine Company to help encourage people always to pick up after their dog AND dispose of it properly. I find it a bit sad that that there needs to be a special day for this, but the amount of dog poo littering out streets, beaches and shores suggests it’s necessary.
It’s one of the responsibilities you take on as a dog owner, along with taking them for walks in all weathers, training your dog and not letting them annoy other people and run up to other dogs.
I always carry several poo bags so I can offer them to people I see on a walk whose dogs do a dump but the owner doesn’t seem to have a poo bag to hand.
Enjoy your walks. Pick it up and bin it.
By the way, today is also bond with your dog day, but I’ll tell you more about that next time.
Keep training and stay safe,
Carol
