Enjoy a lively discussion about dog head collars in this week’s doggy talking tip video, and why Carol doesn’t like them for most training. And as we come slowly out of lockdown, how now is a good time to do that training you’ve always meant to do.
This week’s Down Dog Digestible is all about head collars.
One option for dogs who pull is a headcollar. We discuss why I don’t like them but they can be useful for very strong pulling dogs as a temporary training aid. We have a good debate about various aspects of headcollars – it’s a good episode!
If you do want to use a headcollar, we recommend the Gencon All in One which I demonstrate in the video. We also talk about the most important part of headcollars – teaching your dog to tolerate them in the first place. I say tolerate rather than like for a good reason….
As we come slowly out of lockdown, it’s a good time to do that training you’ve always meant to do. Whether it’s walking nicely on lead, or improving your recall now is the time to act.
But the most vital training to do as we ease back into more normal life is to make sure your dog is comfortable being left alone.
How does your dog respond to being left on their own?
Separation problems cause dogs great distress, emotionally and physically and can also cause huge damage to your home, fixtures and fittings.
Separation problems can develop at any age, so just because your dog was fine PC (pre Covid) does not mean they will cope well now. There have been too many changes in all our lives.
Seeing a dog panting, drooling, chewing, barking, crying and whining because they are scared, and anxious having been left alone is heart rending. And it is preventable.
Our Serene Separation course teaches you how to help your dog be relaxed and cope well with being left alone. It gives you simple games to play which will build your dog’s confidence being on their own. Which means you can go back to work or school knowing your dog will be fine when left alone in the house.
We have an online course looking at helping ease your dog’s anxiety
Serene Separation is a three session live taught, online course, will run on three consecutive Wednesday evenings from 24th March. Each session will be recorded so if you do miss one session you can easily catch up. There’s an accompanying workbook to remind you of the exercises and tasks we’ll share with you – things which are proven to help you and your dog cope with the forthcoming changes.
Make the most of your final few weeks at home. Join our course.
You can find today’s Digestible here along with all the others from previous weeks.
Please do write in and ask if you have a question you’d love us to answer. I want to make sure these Digestibles answer any doggy queries you have.
Enjoy!
Keep safe,
Carol
