Thank you all for helping raise money for such a great charity

I’m doing a happy dance. (Though this is not something that should be seen by others…too alike to an elephant dancing Gangnam style…)

For my birthday last week I set up a Facebook fundraiser to raise money for my favourite charity, Medical Detection Dogs. I initially set my target for £150 but it did so well I raised that to £200 – and on Friday, the last day, we reached a fantastic £280.

I’m delighted, because this money will go towards helping Medical Detection Dogs continue their wonderful work.

Medical Detection dogs are currently working for people with:

  • Type 1 diabetes
  • Epilepsy
  • Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (PoTS)
  • Addisons Disease
  • Severe allergies and
  • Other endocrine disorders

Medical Detection dogs also work in cancer detection and early detection of neurological diseases such as Parkinsons disease.

The cancer work is based on the fact that cancer cells emit different metabolic waste products than normal cells. The differences between these metabolic products can be detected by a dog’s keen sense of smell, even in the early stages of disease.

A trained dog’s ability to correctly identify or rule-out lung, breast, prostate and colo-rectal cancer, at both early and late stages, is over 90%, often 98%.

There’s also some early work on malaria detection, showing promising results with a 73% detection rate, and on bacterial infection as well as more recently six dogs being trained to detect COVID in passengers entering the UK.

Nose Nerd and Devotee memberships are helping

With my medical background, as The Doggy Doctor, you’ll understand why this is the Charity I and Down Dog support – 10% of the profits from our Nose Nerds and Devotee memberships go to the charity and we hope to extend this over the coming year.

Thank you to you if you supported my fundraiser. And if you want to support Medical Detection Dogs regularly, why not join our Nose Nerds or Devotee memberships?

You’ll find more details through clicking the link.

Keep training and stay safe,

Carol
