Why you should read a good (dog) book

I love books

I’ve always been a bookworm – mum and dad told me my first strung together words were “Id a budden” which apparently meant “read a book”. I’m never without a book on the go. I’ve got a whole roomful of books and there’s over 4,000 more on my Kindle account. I really love books!

So I’m celebrating today, because it’s World Book day – a great excuse to curl up somewhere and read.

Find out which doggy books The Doggy Doctor enjoys the most

If you’d like a good dog book to read, I thought I’d tell you about a few of my favourites which I think all dog owners will enjoy:

The Dog Vinci Code by John Rogerson – John was the first ever trainer I learnt from and his first book, Your Dog, Its Development, Behaviour and Training, was the first dog book I read. He has a common sense approach and explains things well

Treat Everyone Like a Dog by Karen B London is a recent book which does what it says in the title. Karen uses dog training ideas and concepts and explains how you can use these to improve your human relationships too. Given I raised my children using these concepts, you can perhaps see why I love this book!

Remember Me? By Eileen Anderson is a bit of a tear-jerker. It describes her own dog’s descent into dementia, what she had to learn and how she helped her dog have a safe and dignified life.

Wag – the science of making your dog happy by Zazie Todd is a recent, well-written book for owners and trainers that describes and discusses more recent dog behaviour research in a highly understandable and accessible way. A good read.

Dog books to make you laugh

Then there are two dog story books that make me laugh, one older and one more recent:

Honey and Gemma by Peter Dobson is a hilarious story of his life with two recalcitrant dogs. I really hope it is still in print. I’ve read it several times and the section where he’s trying to bathe the dogs in a hotel room never fails to make my cry with laughter

Olive, Mabel and Me by Andrew Cotter. I bought this on the back of the hilarious commentary videos Andrew made during the first lockdown and because I love his dry sports commentary too! He received some flack from a Sunday Times article he wrote last week and I beg you not to follow all his advice on raising puppies, but it’s still a fun read Finally, I can’t not mention a good series of dog training books available from Amazon as the Doggy Doctor series…!

Have some time today reading a book,

Keep training and stay safe,

Carol
