When is a behaviour problem not a behaviour problem?

There’s a problem with dogs.

They can’t speak English.

So they can’t tell us if something is wrong. They can only show us something’s not right though the way they behave.

Most problem behaviour in your dog will turn out to be just that – a behaviour problem, but there’s a good reason why I’ll always ask you to make sure your dog has been checked by your vet before I do a House Visit or Consultation Call.

Because sometimes a behaviour problem is not a behaviour problem.

Just occasionally your dog will show some problem behaviour because he has an underlying medical problem. If your pet has a behaviour problem, please check with your vet that there is not a physical or medical issue first. If your dog gets the all clear from your vet, then please do book help from us whenever you need.

There’s a huge long list of medical problems that show themselves as behaviour problems and it really does need your vet to do the detective work, but the most common three are:
– musculoskeletal problems
– skin problems, including ears
– gastrointestinal problems

If I visit you and am worried that there might be a medical or physical cause for your dog’s behaviour problem, I’ll work with you and your vet to investigate it and also agree with you the behaviour change plan you’ll need to work alongside your vet’s medical workup.

Keep training,

Carol
